ABOUT THE MODERN CANVAS STUDIO
From Production to Craft
Modern Canvas, Inc. was founded in 2017 with a vision of bringing beautifully designed fabric architecture to customers with a focus on shifting the ideas of the built home, away from permanence, and towards a softer and more mobile footprint. For nearly a decade, our practice focused on the meticulous design and manufacture of modular canvas kits.
In 2025, realizing that true structural artistry cannot be mass-produced, we have totally redefined the company, evolving from a provider of a modular products to a provider of a bespoke service. It remains our foundational goal to provide a space to connect with the incredible environment around us while providing a level of protection from the sun, rain, wind, and insects—the distractions—so that we can truly allow ourselves to relax and enjoy being exactly right where we are.
The Artist Behind the Canvas
The Art of Shelter is the creative practice of Suzanne Turell, a designer dedicated to redefining small-scale structures. With a background rooted in hands-on craftsmanship and a deep respect for the landscapes these structures inhabit, her studio specializes in creating custom, artful shelters tailored to unique environments.
Suzanne serves as both the lead artist and the primary builder for every commission. By pairing meticulous design, 3D digital modeling, and rigorous engineering with an artisanal approach to physical installation, canvas and wood are transformed into deliberate, beautifully executed spaces. From the first conceptual sketch on a blank page to the final, hand-raised structure on-site, the studio offers a high-touch, intimate experience that brings one-of-a-kind functional art to life.
